CUHK recognised that their operations relied upon an aging central facility and a diverse collection of wide-spread satellite laboratories. Most of these biomedical facilities were in need of refurbishment and renovation but were considered unlikely to meet the wider needs of the University’s evolving research plans.
The University faced the choice of either making a large investment in several facilities that would still not meet their long-term needs, or a more radical approach based upon a longer-term operating plan that would attract biomedical talent to the University through the development of state-of-the-art facilities.
Our role
CCTech was engaged directly on behalf of the University, to develop a new biomedical research strategy that would encompass on- and off-campus facilities managed by LASEC and spread across the city to service the University’s out-lying hospitals.
- CCTech formulated and implemented an extensive online questionnaire, together with interviews and workshops for senior researchers, so that representative opinion from all LASEC facility users could be collated and analysed.
- We also met with senior University managers, visited the biomedical facilities and provided a critical assessment of their condition and suitability for current and future research plans, which included AAALAC International accreditation.
- In addition to the Strategic Report, we also created a conceptual design for new facilities that would take advantage of the latest technological innovations and reduce energy and operational costs.
